Laurie Stivers
My name is Laurie Stivers, and I joined the Northshore Chapter of AGO last year. I had not been involved with AGO since graduating from college in a previous century. So why did I join and why now?
I was at a dinner party last year welcoming back a friend who has moved out of town. One of the guests at that party had recently completed the AGO “Certified Accompanist Certificate”. I was intrigued, and did some investigation. As a part of learning about the Certificate, I also learned more about the North Shore Chapter and the programs it sponsors and supports.
I am not a professional musician. My college degree is in elementary education and geography. I have passed the Illinois CPA exam. I have worked for the same corporation for more than 25 years in a wide variety of roles. But I am also the associate organist at a church in Evanston where I have regularly played for about 30 years. I didn’t think I fit the image of one who joins AGO. I was wrong.
I have found a fascinating and welcoming group of people who, like I, support the world of organ and choral music. The charter for AGO is clear that membership is open not only to the working professionals but to amateur musicians like myself. While I have enjoyed the programs presented by AGO, I am truly enjoying the people of AGO.
There are some opportunities in the coming months to attend concerts as well as participate in workshops. I would urge you to come investigate what NSAGO has to offer!
