CLERGY-MUSICIAN RELATIONSHIPS:
Rivals or Teammates?
Collaboration between clergy and musicians is vital to the ministry of the Christian church, particularly in worship. The panel will explore the importance of teamwork and good communication, emphasizing that musicians and clergy are partners in a common ministry and depend upon each other for effectiveness. We will also discuss ways to approach conflict situations, and suggest strategies for building supportive relationships and mutual respect. The focus of this discussion will be principles and practices, not specific horror stories.
The moderator will be The Rev. David Handley, Interim Pastor of Community Presbyterian Church in Clarendon Hills and Chaplain of the North Shore AGO Chapter. Panel members will be Joseph Fitzer, former professor of theology at St. John’s University in New York, an organist, and former member of the AGO National Professional Concerns Committee; The Rev. Cynthia Hallas, Rector of St. Giles Episcopal Church in Northbrook; The Rev. Arthur A. R. Nelson, former Senior Pastor and current Parish Associate of Winnetka Covenant Church and author of Prayers Public and Personal; and Joyce Robinson, Editor of The Diapason and an organist.
You can participate: Topics you would like the panel to discuss should be emailed to Mary Gifford – giffitz@att.net . There will also be sheets available at the presentation for you to present written topics/questions for the panel.
We will have food and drink to ward off the winter’s chill and time to socialize with each other. Plan to come to this interesting round-table discussion.
There is ample parking at the church and the meeting hall is handicapped accessible.
