March 2014 Message from the Board: Membership Matters

Mar 1, 2014 | Past Dean's Columns

Each of us joined the North Shore AGO for a reason; each of us continues to pay our dues, maintain an affiliation with an important national organization, and keep our AGO membership on our resumes for a reason.  Perhaps it is a love of organ music, or an appreciation for the instrument and its enduring value.  Maybe the multitude of opportunities for learning, and the chance to be part of a group of like-minded people – networking and socializing may be the main draw. For some, it is a desire to support the endeavors of those who have made room for the organ in their lives, whether as a part-time hobby or a full-time passion. Many of our members enjoy the concerts by world-class musicians that the chapter sponsors.  And for others, the reason is based on academic or professional matters.

Whatever the case, the “why” of being a member is far less important than the “how” and the “what.” How do you participate in the North Shore AGO?  How do you show support for the organization?  How will you help ensure the stability, health, and reputation of the chapter to which you belong?  What can you contribute to your chapter?

Your officers and board take a great deal of care programming the season’s events each year.  We take into account a range of interests and understand that our chapter spans both a broad geographical area and an array of professions among its individual members.  In recent years, we have hosted a variety of events aimed at a variety of audiences, including children, youth, concert-goers of all ages, church musicians, and jazz organists. We regularly offer hymn festivals, member recitals, workshops, fellowship dinners, and speakers and clinicians.  Our chapter is fortunate to have access to amazing venues that allow us to showcase beautiful instruments throughout the North Shore and in Chicago.  We have teamed up with the Organ Historical Society, our sister AGO chapters in the Greater Chicago Area, and local churches, choral ensembles, schools, and civic groups to help provide high-caliber musical programs

As we consider this, it is perplexing when events are met with minimal attendance.  Our most recent concert, featuring 2012 NYACOP winner and stunningly gifted organist Daryl Robinson, garnered a crowd of less than 40 audience members, with only about 10% of the North Shore Chapter AGO in attendance.  Many other events have attracted similar participation from the chapter, even when factors such as weather, time of day, and parking are optimal.

As we begin planning our programming for 2014-2015, we would like your input!  Soon we will be surveying our membership regarding programming and program attendance. Our hope is that your feedback, comments and suggestions will help make our chapter more vital.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Americans will consume 818 hot dogs every second from Memorial Day to Labor Day. I’m not sure who figures these things out….but I do know that this is the season most of us take time out to do things outside the realm of music. If you haven’t been to a Cubs game,...

I like this quote by Martin Luther King that I recently read, “Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve." Though as a musician, we might be content to just enjoy the experience of learning and performing beautiful music, often our responsibilities entail much...
