Member’s Chalkboard | April 2021

Matthew Doran

I wanted you  to be aware of an apparent new and fairly convincing spam attempt, apparently targeting some members of the AGO.  I received this email and was going to do some more investigation today to see if it was legitimate because it looked a little suspect, and I found that several other AGO members received the same email.  The convincing part is that it seems to be customized by saying that the at-home wedding event will be in the same town as your personal place of work, and since one person cannot have multiple weddings at the same time in their many private residences, this is not a real request!  Please know that this is spam and do not reply!  The text of that email is this:

Hello,

i want to know if you can perform (piano) for an hour at my wedding ceremony with my beautiful fiancée at a private home in [city/town appears here] on April 10th, 2021. The ceremony will start by 5pm and the event will be attended by limited friends and family. Social distancing will be adhered to and all guests will be putting on face masks. You will be required to perform 7 minutes prelude, 2 minutes processional, 3 minutes Recessional and 10 minutes postlude all during the 1 hour of the ceremony. Please let me know if you are available and how much do you charge?

Please be aware of this and do not reply or provide personal information in response to that email if you receive it!

Conducted via video conferencing, participants may also choose to play for the class from their home/church pianos or organs as a means of engaging with the subjects more deeply.

The schedule of dates and subjects are as follows:

May 16: Accompanying anthems, solos, and psalms, with reference to certification requirements

All owners of a book from DARCEY PRESS publications require no added “okay” for use via Zoom.  Zoom church services are church services, so they are completely okayed repertoire.  That includes using “In Melody and Songs” hymn settings of Isaac Watts texts.  At the bottom of each hymn/setting is an okay for reproduction of the hymn for sacred service use.
