What’s Your Story?
December 2019

I’m coming off a delightful concert where I played organ along with the North Shore Choral Society and Chicago Bronze handbell ensemble. North Park University graduate Tierra Whetstone sensitively conducted the Ave Maria of R. Nathaniel Dett, a beautiful piece that should get more attention. Tierra was joined by fellow NPU grad Onella Piyatilake as soloist, and Ben Melsky played harp (amazingly) with the NSCS on Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols. Musical Director of Chicago Bronze, (and former NSAGO Dean,) Andrea Handley not only conducted the ensemble but wrote several pieces on the program.

This certainly served to energize me at the same time it was a demanding program to prepare. Practicing on a new organ is always a challenge and joy. I’m happy in my new job, continuing to assist another church this season as Guest Organist, and managing to keep up my work with the Chicago Symphony Chorus as Accompanist for their Merry Merry Chicago concert. (I also free-lance as Collaborative Pianist with singers and instrumentalists.)

These activities are mentioned, not as an advertisement, but as examples of the vital meaning music brings to my life. How about you? What do you find significant about your work? If you’re a hobby Organist or beginning your studies, how do you prioritize your playing in your daily schedule? How is your calling to be an Organist seen in your daily practice? How do you stay “fed” so you can minister to others through your musical duties? What do you find helpful when collaborating with the rest of the staff where you’re employed? Let’s see what we can share to bring insight and encouragement to each other.

May you have a blessed Advent and Christmas season, celebrating the birth of Christ through your musical gifts. Others will be touched by your ministry.
