Lowell Johnson
My husband, Lowell, began his life-long love of the pipe organ, and the music it could produce, at the Dutch Reformed Church in Roseland where his aunt was organist. We shared a piano background but once we’d settled in Deerfield, he began organ lessons while I, as well as our daughters, studied piano. He never aspired to being a professional organist but he did develop his skills throughout his lifetime.
The discovery of organ study trips to Europe began regular visits to famous cathedrals. We also attended the AGO National Conventions and the Regionals whenever we could. To be able to hear the wonderful variety of organs throughout this country was such a gift. Add to that being able to hear outstanding and well-known organists put a special joy in our lives.
Many of you knew Lowell through our membership in the Fox Valley chapter (when we lived in Barrington) as well as the North Shore chapter. We both firmly believed that the legacy of the organ needs to be supported by the amateur enthusiasts, as well as the professionals. To that end, I will continue to be a part of the North Shore Chapter and will attend and support its programs for as long as I am able.
