Dean’s Column | May 2024

Welcome to the Merry Month of May!

Of course there are actually a few religions with a very significant allegiance to the Virgin Mary! Obviously this is the season of so many events that include graduations including high schools, colleges and universities, closing choral and organ concerts, plays, church choirs are ending the usual choral season with special concerts and Evensongs, church organists are playing recitals, college organists are in the midst of playing their graduate recitals. Many other events of the month and season include obviously Cinco de Mayo along with its own taste of music, Mothers’ Day special luncheons and closing out the month is Memorial Day (previously Decoration Day) with the usual parades and special concerts.

The word May comes from the word Maius – from the Greek work Maia. This word is usually identified with the idea of fertility. May is also named for the maiores meaning “elders” while the month of June is named for “Juniors”.

The birthstone for the month is the emerald that is emblematic for love and success while the lily of the valley is the flower of the month.

There are so many important special days month long to be aware of including Working Class month, Better Living month, World Trade month, Garden for Wildlife month, Skin Cancer Awareness month, Bicycle month, National Golf month, Community Action Awareness month, National Burger month, National Moving month and Older Americans month.

So as you go through this Merry Month of May with all of these very interesting days to remember or honor, also please take the time to take the time to try to squeeze in some of the many and varied concerts that will be available all month long. Obviously there certainly will be a variety offered for us to partake of!
